Industrial Engineer

The Role

Bowery Farming is seeking an experienced industrial engineer to design and implement operational and manufacturing best practices in Bowery’s modern farms.  You will perform analysis and create designs to continuously improve Bowery’s efficient and highly automated grow systems and work on topics spanning facility and workflow layouts, labor optimization (including ergonomics and economy of motion), automation, production planning, and production systems integration.  Your work would put you in daily interaction with Bowery’s systems engineering team, BoweryOS software team, and farm and business operations teams to drive innovation and best practices for our current farms as well as our roadmap of farms in development.  This opportunity will be based in the NYC/Northern NJ area.

What you’ll do at Bowery

  • You’ll apply industrial engineering, manufacturing and operations thinking to Bowery’s production system (from “seed to store”) and play a core role developing the human and materials flows in our future farms with a focus on end-to-end efficiency
  • You’ll work with Bowery’s farm operations and systems engineering teams to optimize how each process is performed, how process flows link together, how techniques evolve, and where and when additional automation is implemented
  • You’ll develop simulations, prototypes and metrics to inform system and workflow design changes, and you’ll educate the broader company around these tools and their value
  • You’ll partner with the software engineering group to jointly define the software roadmap as it relates to labor optimization, system efficiency management, and automation
  • You’ll ensure that our facilities and work processes adhere to stringent worker and food safety regulations and Bowery’s high standard of quality
  • You’ll develop relationship with vendors, partners and advisors who can supply additional expertise, technologies, and practices

Who you are

  • You have a Bachelor’s degree (and ideally a M.S./M.Eng.) in Mechanical engineering, Industrial engineering, Operations Research or Engineering management, and academic or professional training around core theories of industrial operations (LEAN manufacturing, production planning, queueing and scheduling theory, work management, quality control, optimization theory, six sigma, etc)
  • You have 5-8+ years of experience in an engineering or operations role in an industrial or manufacturing environment.  Bonus if your experience has included exposure to food manufacturing, highly regulated industries, and/or automation and motion control technologies
  • You’ve led or been a core part of cross-functional teams and projects and are able to make the case for your recommendations and see them through to execution
  • You can point to experience driving end-to-end efficiency during the design of new facilities as well as continuous improvement of existing facilities
  • You are familiar with industrial engineering tools including simulation, layout design, and linear/integer optimization
  • You are able to communicate both in the languages of analytically-driven engineering as well as ROI-based business cases, and you know your way around a Microsoft Excel model (SQL and linear programming languages are a plus)
  • You’re an excellent oral and written communicator who is able to shift between technical discussions and layman’s terms with ease
  • You believe that teams succeed and fail together and take responsibility for ensuring the success and satisfaction of your teammates

About Bowery

Bowery is growing food for a better future by revolutionizing agriculture. Our modern farming company combines the benefits of the best local farms with advances made possible by technology to grow post-organic produce you can feel good about eating. BoweryOS, our proprietary software system, uses vision systems, automation technology, and machine learning to monitor plants and all the variables that drive their growth 24/7. Because we control the entire process from seed to store, Bowery farms use zero pesticides, 95% less water, and are 100+ times more productive on the same footprint of land than traditional agriculture. Bowery produce is currently available at select Whole Foods and Foragers stores in the Tristate area, and featured on the menus of Tom Colicchio’s New York restaurants Craft and Fowler & Wells. Based in New York City, the company has raised $27.5M from leading investors including General Catalyst, GGV Capital, GV (formerly Google Ventures) and First Round Capital.
