Bowery farming is seeking a visionary leader for our agricultural science efforts. The Head of Agricultural Science will lead a team of agricultural scientists to combine plant science theory, software-driven analytics, and on-the-ground influence in Bowery’s farms. You will manage Bowery’s agricultural R&D priorities, guiding the theory, design, management, interpretation and actions that come from the continuous testing we can perform in our farms. You will provide input around future farm design improvements, our crop variety roadmap, the development of Bowery’s proprietary BoweryOS software, and the overall direction of the company and the indoor agriculture industry. Role is based in NYC/NJ.
What you’ll do at Bowery
You’ll build world-leading agricultural science capabilities at Bowery Farming, taking the best of existing theory and practices and merging it with new breakthroughs made possible by Bowery’s unique growing system and software capabilities.
You will help to tackle highly operational plant science problems like improving plant yield, quality, and consistency, as well as pursue longer-term research into new plant varieties, novel growing methods, and potential for plant breeding.
You’ll define the frameworks that allow Bowery to conduct deep and meaningful plant science research with high agility and flexibility, and put them to use across our current and future farms.
You’ll manage a growing team of agricultural scientists and work closely with systems engineers, data scientists, software developers, in-farm horticulturalists and operations teams, and business operators to tackle multidisciplinary problems.
You will cultivate a group of agricultural science advisors with diverse areas of expertise who can provide input on highly nuanced research questions, and maintain strong relationships across the global indoor agricultural science community.
Who you are
You have a PhD or Masters degree in the fields of horticulture, plant science, plant biochemistry, agricultural/biosystems engineering, controlled environment agriculture, or a related subject with a focus on leafy greens and/or produce.
You have 6+ years of operating or consulting experience in indoor growing environments, and ideally an understanding of the engineering systems and/or methods for software-based analysis that are used in such environments.
You have a prolific command of the theory behind plant genetics, plant growth, and plant health and can translate that theory into applied research.
You’ve built and/or run a successful research organization, designed successful R&D processes, have a “second-nature” understanding of hypothesis testing and experimental data analytics, and can point to the real-world impacts of your research.
You know how to build a business case, can speak fluently about the costs and benefits of the work you’ve done, and know how to build and manage a research budget.
You are able to intuitively assess plant health issues that might arise, come up with tests to confirm root causes, and roll changes out once your hypothesis is validated.
You’re a capable people manager with a track record of recruiting, directing, coaching and inspiring teams towards high performance.
You’re an excellent oral and written communicator who is able to shift between technical discussions and layman’s terms with ease.
You believe that teams succeed and fail together and take responsibility for ensuring the success and satisfaction of your teammates.
Bowery is the Modern Farming Company on an ambitious mission to transform the future of food and change the face of agriculture. We believe in better food, better access to that food, and better care for the world around us. By leveraging automation, software, and controlled environment technology, we’re building an innovative new way of growing food locally that’s over 100x+ more productive than the same square foot of farmland, while using 0 pesticides and 95% less water. Bowery believes in the power and potential of technology to help in solving many of the world’s problems, but without great people, technology can only do so much. We have assembled a best-in-class team of interdisciplinary experts who are passionate about the problems that we’re tackling.
Bowery is based in New York City and has raised $7.5M in seed capital to date from some of the best investors in the world, including First Round Capital, Box Group, Lerer Hippeau Ventures, SV Angel, Homebrew, and more. We are also backed by established leaders and innovators in the food industry, including the founder CEOs of Blue Apron and Dig Inn, Chairman of Plated, and Top Chef judge and restaurateur Tom Colicchio.
